A new Grace Kelly exhibition (2014) is taking place at the Palace Het Loo in the Netherlands, showcasing clothes, accessories, film clips, and photographs to bring to life the unique story of the fascinating and eventful life of Princess Grace of Monaco.

One of the highlights of having gone to Europe to see the Grace of Monaco film was going to see the exhibit at Het Loo Palace in the Netherlands of “Grace Kelly: Princess & Style Icon”, which runs until October 26 – NOW EXTENDED TO JANUARY 4, 2015.
Het Loo is a 300-year-old Palace that was the former residence of the royal family of the Netherlands; fully furnished and with amazing gardens (currently under restoration), it could perhaps be considered the Versailles of the North.
Het Loo Palace is the latest stop for the Grace Kelly exhibition that was recently featured in Philadelphia and in Montreal. The exhibition had tremendous success at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London in 2010, after its debut at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco in the summer of 2007. Since its inception, the exhibit has been seen in over ten cities on four continents, keeping alive the legend and legacy of Princess Grace for those who knew and loved her, and for new generations to come.
The exhibit is courtesy of the archives from the Prince’s Palace of Monaco, and consists of many items of Princess Grace’s clothing, including the embroidered suit she wore for her civil wedding to Prince Rainier III. There are clips and costumes from her films, as well as many items of her jewelry and accessories, including the famous “Kelly” bag by Hermes, which was named after her.
It is fortunate that Princess Grace was known to preserve everything, as there are amazing items on exhibit, including the invitation letter to the Academy Awards Ceremony in which there are specific instructions for attending the event, and for winning the Oscar.
What was most striking to me is that many of the items of clothing were rather ordinary on their own, but they became extraordinary when she wore them. The beauty of Grace’s style is not really in what she wore, but how she wore it. Because Grace was such a luminous beauty, she could make even the styles of the 1970s look amazing and elegant.
I have seen the exhibitions of Princess Diana’s dresses, and while she was stunningly beautiful, most of her dresses were also gorgeous on their own. This is not necessarily the case for Princess Grace’s wardrobe – many of her outfits were quite simple, yet she made everything she wore look simply beautiful. I had first seen this exhibit at Sotheby’s in New York in October of 2007. The Sotheby’s exhibit included many more film clips and home movies from all the eras of Grace’s life, and it was a delightful surprise to see the Dales featured in some of these movies!
