Remembering the birth of Prince Albert

Partial excerpt from the new book “My Days with Princess Grace of Monaco”

When Princess Caroline Louise Marguerite was born on January 23, 1957, she had briefly been the hereditary heir to the throne until her brother came along. The laws of succession favor males, so a female is called an “heir presumptive” until a male – the “heir apparent” – is born.

Prince Albert II was born Albert Alexandre Louis Pierre, Marquis des Baux, on March 14, 1958. A one-hundred-and-one gun salute announced the birth of the heir to the throne of Monaco. Everyone was thrilled to welcome him into the world, and Prince Rainier was overjoyed to have a son. The Grimaldi heirs were named after their ancestors, with names that could be spoken in French as well as in English. Albert II was named after his great-great-grandfather, Albert I of Monaco (1848–1922), known as the “Mariner Prince,” who was a pioneer in the science of Oceanography and who founded the world-renowned Oceanographic Museum of Monaco.

When Prince Albert was born, Prince Rainier wrote to Martin: “I want to thank [you] so much for your very kind letter you so very nicely sent me for the birth of little Prince Albert. The 14th of March was a wonderful day that will count in my memory and heart as it will in the history of this little country. The Princess and myself were so touched by the gesture of the U.S. Navy. It was indeed so moving and so delicate that the USS SALEM came to honour the little Prince by a gun salute on the day he was a week old. I am writing to Admiral Brown to express to him our most sincere appreciation.”

 About the Twins Birth

During a cesarian birth, the doctor delivering them will have no more than a symbolic hand in deciding the destiny of the Grimaldi dynasty.

In principle, there’s no medical reason a doctor would have an active role in deciding which newborn is delivered first, even in the case of a Caesarean section, an expert said.

“The obstetrician will always deliver first the twin that presents itself first when the uterus is opened at the time of Caesarean section,” said Dr Patrick O’Brien, spokesperson for Britain’s Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. “We don’t decide in advance which twin to deliver first.”
