New Grace Kelly museum exhibition pays tribute to the world’s ultimate style maven
Grace Kelly Museum Exhibition in Canada and USA: Grace Kelly was barely 18 in 1947 when she left Philadelphia to embark on an acting career. Nine years later, with several films and an Oscar under her belt, Kelly took on the most arduous role of her career — wife of Prince Rainier III of Monaco — although there are indications the three films she earlier made with Alfred Hitchcock were no treat, the famous director being somewhat of an ogre. The press dubbed Grace and Hitch as Beauty and the Beast.
About 1,600 photographers and reporters covered the royal wedding in Monaco. And Princess Grace, like Princess Diana after her, rarely had a moment of privacy again. Kelly, a mother of three, died in a car crash in 1982 at age 52. Celebrities who die tragically, like Diana, seem to remain forever in our hearts.
A new (Grace Kelly Museum) exhibition at the McCord Museum pays tribute to this classiest and most public of women who influenced style throughout her life. Fashionistas around the world copied her taste in handbags, sunglasses, hairstyles, hats and dresses.
Even today Kelly’s legacy lives on. Nicole Kidman is currently filming Grace of Monaco and has had her hair cropped short with soft curls to mimic Kelly’s famous hairstyle.
From Philadelphia to Monaco: Grace Kelly — Beyond the Icon continues at the McCord until Oct. 6. The exhibition, in a somewhat different form, was earlier staged in Britain, and was made possible through the co-operation of the Grimaldi Foundation of Monaco.
