According to the new book, “My Days with Princess Grace of Monaco”, when Princess Grace first visited Canada for the Montreal Expo in 1967, it ended with a tragic miscarriage that prevented her from having any more children. She was truly devastated… Now Princess Grace is due to make another appearance in Canada in the dubious film that bears her name masquerading as a biopic, which her children have decried as being completely fictional and inaccurate, bordering on a farce.
After a more than rocky start at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, Grace of Monaco comes to Canada as Princess Grace. There were high hopes for Nicole Kidman to become an Oscar contender as she took the role of Hollywood royalty Grace Kelly in what could have been a cinematic hit. Instead, the movie got entangled in differences between French director Olivier Dahan (La Vie en Rose) and American producer Harvey Weinstein creating such a fiasco that it is already available in Canada (March 03, 2015) on DVD and Blu-ray without any word of a cinematic release in the USA.
The original script (and movie title as shown in the rest of the world) is Grace of Monaco – however, in Canada, the film has been rebranded as “Princess Grace” perhaps to create some distance with the original movie reviews – or perhaps to give it some distinction between the eventual release in the United States. Even at this stage it is unsure if the movie will see any screen time in the USA.
The official synopsis reads: “Nicole Kidman stars as legendary Hollywood actress-turned-princess Grace Kelly in this lavish biographical drama from acclaimed director Olivier Dahan. Six years after leaving Hollywood to become Princess of Monaco, Grace, now a mother of two, considers a comeback in the movies against her husband’s wishes. But with political strife threatening war in her country, Grace must choose once and for all between her life as a film star and her role as princess.”
The movie should have had all the right ingredients to become an Oscar contender with Nicole Kidman playing the lead (Grace Kelly) and a cast of illustrious personalities like Tim Roth (Prince Rainier), Roger Ashton-Griffiths (Alfred Hitchcock), Paz Vega (Maria Callas), along with notable actors such as Derek Jacobi, Frank Langella, Milo Ventimiglia, Parker Posey, Robert Lindsay, etc. However, the results were quite disappointing, resulting in Nicole Kidman “winning” the 2015 BARFTA Award (British Academy for Rubbish Films and Terrible Acting), and Harvey Weinstein’s continuous reluctance to expose American audiences to this version of Grace Kelly
Yet, wether you blame the script, the director, or the acting, the upshot is that the movie does not portray an accurate picture of either the characters nor the events that took place. The real story can be found in the pages of “My Days with Princess Grace of Monaco” written as an eyewitness account by those closest to Princess Grace and Prince Rainier during those historic events (available on AMAZON USA & AMAZON CANADA).
Listen to one of the many reviews – then decide whether you want to watch the Princess Grace movie – or spend your time getting to know the real Princess Grace
Princess Grace left an iconic legacy, yet Princess Charlene is poised to make her own mark. Just recently on December 10, 2014, she gave birth to beautiful twins – giving Monaco its next heir.
